Bellevue - The Eastside's High-Tech Epicenter

Bellevue, Washington is a Northwest city that is plugged in. Recognized as the center for the wired economy - the high bandwidth community you need to compete - Bellevue is at the epicenter of the high technology corridor. With seven percent of King County's population and nearly 10 percent of its employment, Bellevue is home to nearly 20 percent of the county's high-technology firms.

Leading the Way
In Washington's 2000 "Technology Fast 50," a list of the top 50 high tech companies in the state, compiled by Deloitte & Touche, more than half were located in East King County. Bellevue was clearly the leader, home to 12 of these high tech stars including: Onyx Software, BSQUARE Corporation, Coinstar, Inc., UltraBac.com and Data Dimensions.

Cyber smart
In Bellevue, there are no dead zones to cyberspace. At a time when other cities are just beginning to discuss the merits, challenges and costs of installing high-capacity fiber optic trunk lines, Bellevue has already buried a state-of-the-art fiber optic loop with access available to the entire city. Space options ranging from innovative Downtown Class A space to state-of-the-art master-planned corporate campuses with cutting edge technology are available.

Living in a wired city
Technology is also an ingrained part of Bellevue's culture. Approximately 80 percent of Bellevue homes have personal computers, which is significantly higher than the national average of 60 percent. Even with this higher percentage of wired households, the City has a plan for extending fiber optic networks to residential neighborhoods. This will provide fast internet connections via copper, a technology that rivals cable modem and provides "persistent connections" meaning users don't have to continually log on.

Techno think
Bellevue is also the home of the Northwest Center for Emerging Technologies. Located on the campus of Bellevue Community College, the center is a virtual on-campus think tank dedicated to developing cutting edge curriculum for students studying information technologies. It's a perfect partnership, because the college, with a student body over 20,000, is key to training and retraining the Bellevue high tech workforce.

Clusters
Today, Bellevue offers an international business support community of technology-focused finance, legal, labor, telecommunication, education and other institutions that form technology clusters. These synergistic clusters of related businesses are judged by researchers as critical nuclei of technology and talent coming together in one crucial mass of skilled workers, established employers and entrepreneurs in vital sectors of the economy. Bellevue's clustered infrastructure allows companies to move here and immediately do business around the world. That's why Bellevue is the place to be in the wired economy.
