R.D. Merrill Company

Our story dates back to the early 1890’s when our founder, Richard Dwight (R.D.) Merrill, a timber pioneer and family man who loved the outdoors, had the vision to build a business that would last for generations. He established the timberland holdings that would become the cornerstones for the R.D. Merrill Company and as he envisioned, Merrill family descendants still own and direct the company. An aggressive businessman, R.D. was equally compassionate and forward thinking and the R.D. Merrill Company grew to become a successful business as strong as its magnificent forests. Today R.D. would hardly recognize the thriving enterprises that extend far beyond the lands he acquired, but our mission and values are rooted in his vision. We think R.D. would be proud to know the company was recognized as the 2020 Family Business of the Year by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
The R.D. Merrill Company is led by R.D.’s great grandson and an experienced team with years of operating acumen. Along with the 25,000 acres of timberlands, the R.D. Merrill Company includes two operators that are leaders in their fields. Merrill Gardens is a highly respected senior housing company and Pillar Properties is an award-winning multifamily developer, owner and operator.
